Hawick Flood Group
COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS
About Us
After the serious flooding in October 2005 in Hawick and a period of public meetings, blame and debate, Hawick Community Council arranged an open meeting of concerned and willing Hawick people, then in October 2007 Hawick Volunteer Flood Group was formed.
The aim of the group is to react in the event of a flood warning and check on and assist pre-identified vulnerable people and the general public until there is an all clear or actual flooding at which time the group would pass on responsibility to the emergency services.
Councillor Stuart Marshall agreed to front the group as Group Coordinator with Marion Chrystie as his deputy. The group consists of Coordinator, deputy, five area coordinators who have volunteers behind them if a flood warning is issued.
Hawick has been split into areas which each coordinator will cover, these are, Crowbyres to Towerknowe, Sandbed and Buccleuch Road, Wilton Park gates to Station buildings, Millport to Laidlaw Terrace, Duke Street to Weensland Mill and Mansfield Road to SBC Yard.
Jim Gill Scottish Borders Council Emergency Planning Officer has been very helpful in giving presentations, advice and attending meetings. Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has also proved useful allies in assisting us become the action group we are today.
